Things you can do

Stalking is unpredictable and dangerous. No two stalking situations are alike. There are no guarantees that what works for one person will work for another, yet you can take steps to increase your safety.

  • If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
  • Trust your instincts. Don’t downplay the danger. If you feel you are unsafe, you probably are.
  • Take threats seriously. Danger generally is higher when the stalker talks about suicide or murder, or when a victim tries to leave or end the relationship.
  • Contact a crisis hotline, victim services agency, or a domestic violence or rape crisis program. They can help you devise a safety plan, give you information about local laws, weigh options such as seeking a protection order, and refer you to other services.
  • Develop a safety plan, including things like changing your routine, arranging a place to stay, and having a friend or relative go places with you. Also, decide in advance what to do if the stalker shows up at your home, work, school, or somewhere else. Tell people how they can help you. Click here to learn more about safety plans.
  • Don’t communicate with the stalker or respond to attempts to contact you.
  • Keep evidence of the stalking. When the stalker follows you or contacts you, write down the time, date, and place. Keep emails, text messages, phone messages, letters, or notes. Photograph anything of yours the stalker damages and any injuries the stalker causes. Ask witnesses to write down what they saw. Click here to download a stalking incident and behavior log.
  • Contact the police. Every state has stalking laws. The stalker may also have broken other laws by doing things like assaulting you or stealing or destroying your property.
  • Consider getting a court order that tells the stalker to stay away from you.
  • Tell family, friends, roommates, and co-workers about the stalking and seek their support.
  • Tell security staff at your job or school. Ask them to help watch out for your safety.

If someone you know is being stalked

  • Listen.
  • Show support.
  • Don’t blame the victim for the crime.
  • Remember that every situation is different, and allow the person being stalked to make choices about how to handle it.
  • Find someone you can talk to about the situation.
  • Take steps to ensure your own safety.

November 1, 2011 – Day 92 of Morgan’s stalking – seems like all is well, but it is not…

Morgan gets a text message from her girlfriend, “Call me! Hey Morgan 🙂 ”  And Morgan texts her back, “Hey cutie pie how are you?”  Steve and Morgan have already been in contact and she is on her way home.  He is hidden in another spot.  Every time he goes to a different place.  He has not told Morgan, but he keeps this a secret from her.  We have heard so much about ways that our communications with Morgan can be intercepted that we are being ultra cautious.

Steve calls me because he knows how worried I am, and tells me that Morgan has just past where he is and in a minute he will start to follow her home.  He tells me it’s snowing and freezing out, there will not be a stalker in this weather.  It helps, but still I am worried that he is going to be close enough and I express this to him.  He tells me to not worry, that she will be out of sight, but he feels like we have to take small chances to catch him.  If she stops for even a few seconds he will catch up, then he can speed way up, and be upon her in absolutely no time at all.

I have a sick, empty feeling in my stomach, I feel we are taking chances with our daughter.  But in order to protect her, this is what it has come to.  Taking calculated risks, leaving her out of our sight for seconds at a time.  Hoping that our extra bit of hanging back is enough to give her stalker enough courage to move in, and then be caught.

There is no harrowing moment tonight, Morgan comes home without incident and wonders what all the fuss is about.  I know that this frightens her, that she might be followed again, and we are reminding her of it.  But I weigh that against how the Garfield Sheriff’s Department fell flat on their face, with the assurance that next time it would be different, when in fact the next time was worse.  I am not saying that they may not have intercepted him if she had dialed 911 while driving, but right when she got home and we called them they could have been proactive and looked for the car, pulled it over and questioned him – there are not too many ways to go from that intersection.   This further eroded any hope Morgan had in them of stopping this nightmare.

I met her in the driveway, with the usual spray and gave her a kiss.  She thanked me and then we saw the lights of Steve’s truck turning onto the street.  Morgan told me that we didn’t have to do this.  I told her, oh yes we do Morgan, and we will never stop, you know that,

We hugged, and when Steve drove up she walked to his truck and hugged him too.  I watched him whisper in her ear, and I wondered what “daddy thing” he had just told her.  She smiled, so I knew it was a good one.  We all walked in the house and Steve and I held hands watching her go to her room.  She told us we were “too much,” but without saying a word Steve and I knew we were not enough, not yet, but we knew we would be, we had to be.

We headed for an inviting bed, and said nothing, just staring at a dark ceiling for the longest while.  Then for some reason we both sat up and decided to check the cameras before going to sleep.  It seemed like I had heard noises earlier, really, really small noises, so I wasn’t concerned as it was snowing out.  We were exhausted, but went into the bathroom where it was all set up and sat together looking at our camera monitor, calling up motion events for the evening, there was one in particular we went right to, at 23.51.30 camera number 4 spots a little light moving around on the other side of the berm.  We watched it a few times and could not tell what it might be.  Tired and needing sleep we decided it could wait until morning.  Steve said it was probably a reflection of something.

We went to bed, then slept, and I felt we had somehow moved in a positive direction tonight…boy was I wrong.

MISSING MORGAN AND BLOWING OFF STEAM – JUST A LITTLE…

morning

STEVE AND I WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT MORGAN’S HORRIFIC STALKING AND MURDER – AND YES, UNITL AN INVESTIGATION IS LAUNCHED WE ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN CONTINUE TO CONDUCT AN OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION – AND YES, IT’S HORRIBLE FOR US!

WE JUST REALIZED THAT A SIMPLE QUESTION HAS NEVER BEEN ANSWERED AND PERHAPS YOU CAN HELP, BECAUSE I THINK I AM MISSING SOMETHING HERE – IF THE GARFIELD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT HAS SELF ADMITTEDLY RESPONDED TO OVER 50 CALLS AT OUR RESIDENCE, AND NEVER SAW ANY SIGN OF A STALKER –

DESPITE NUMEROUS CRYSTAL CLEAR SHOE PRINTS IN CAREFULLY WATERED AND RAKED SOIL AROUND OUR HOUSE, WILDLIFE CAMERA PHOTOS, VIDEO SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE, EYE WITNESS TESTIMONY, TESTIMONY ABOUT REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO OPEN OUR FRONT DOOR THROUGH A NUMERIC KEYPAD, METAL CLEARLY CRACKED IN THE GUTTER OVER MORGAN’S WINDOW (BY AS OF YET UNDETERMINED FORCES), THE TESTIMONY OF OUR NEIGHBORS CONCERNING THE BIZARRE BEHAVIOR OF MORGAN’S STALKING SUSPECT(S), ET CETERA, ET CETERA –

THEN HOW DO WE HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THIS SAME SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT CAN BE REALISTICALLY EXPECTED TO RESPOND TO A 911 CALL ON THE MORNING MORGAN WAS FOUND DEAD AND THINK SOMETHING NEFARIOUS MIGHT HAVE OCCURRED?   OF COURSE THEY COULDN’T, THE STALKER EASILY ELUDED EVERY EFFORT THEY EVER PUT FORTH TO CATCH HIM; SO OF COURSE ON THE MORNING MORGAN WAS FOUND DEAD –

HER BODY FILLED WITH A DATE RAPE COCKTAIL (LETHAL MANY, MANY TIMES OVER), ALL OF HER VALUABLE JEWELRY MISSING, 3 OF HER NAILS TORN, AN UNIDENTIFIED SUBSTANCE ON HER CHEST (VISIBLE ONLY UNDER THE CRIME SCENE LIGHTING), A SUSPICIOUS RED BRUISE ON HER FOREHEAD, BLOOD IN HER MOUTH. OF COURSE THE GARFIELD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WOULD BE TOTALLY INCAPABLE OF PUTTING 2 + 2  TOGETHER AND REACHING THE UNBELIEVABLE ASSUMPTION THAT HER STALKER COULD HAVE ESCALATED TO MURDER.  THAT THE UPCOMING EXECUTION OF A SUBPOENA UPON CITY MARKET, EL JEBEL THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY TO TURN OVER ALL THE SUSPECTS WORKING HOURS, WHICH THE DETECTIVE WAS CONFIDENT, ONCE OVERLAID WITH THE TIMELINE OF STALKING WOULD BE COMPELLING EVIDENCE TO FINALLY MAKE AN ARREST OF HER STALKER.  A FACT THAT MORGAN WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT SHE SHARED WITH HER DOCTOR, DURING HER OFFICE VISIT, 36 HOURS BEFORE HER DEATH.  OF COURSE THE GARFIELD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WOULD WANT TO BELIEVE THIS WAS ALL COMPLETELY UNRELATED. MERE COINCIDENCE!

THE SAME GARFIELD SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WHICH OCCUPIED THE HOUSE MORGAN WAS KILLED IN THAT MORNING TO PROCESS THE SCENE – IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF COLORADO REVISED STATUTES PERTAINING STRICTLY TO MEDICO LEGAL INVESTIGATION OF DEATH SCENES IN THE STATE OF COLORADO!  AND SUPERVISED BY AN INDIVIDUAL EITHER FROM THE FARNUM HOLT FUNERAL HOME OR A CHIEF DEPUTY CORONER FROM THE GARFIELD COUNTIES CORONERS OFFICE…OR MAYBE EVEN BOTH?!?  AND OF COURSE ALSO PRESENT IN VIOLATION OF COLORADO REVISED STATUTES PERTAINING SPECIFICALLY TO DEPUTY CORONERS.

OF COURSE I AM MISSING SOMETHING…THE TRUTH

October 7 – 8, 2011 – Days 67 & 68 of Morgan’s Stalking – The Stakeout…

Aspen Tree

In the morning Steve and I went out to breakfast at our favorite local’s hangout in Carbondale, we texted Morgan (she was with a friend) to see if she would join us and she did.  Every time we went there Morgan would order the exact same breakfast, so it got to the point where we would just order for her, after checking of course.

After breakfast, Steve and I spent some time painting the motion detectors a brown camouflage color, so they did not stand out at night.  The motion detectors were the most consistent weapon in our arsenal.  The stalker could not cross through an area covered without setting the detector off.  The way they were deployed was giving us advance warning to a window banging event.  It had not allowed us to actually catch him, but it was certainly the most promising.  Early detection is the key, just like cancer, if you think about it.

A friend of Morgan’s texted her around 7:00 pm, “Dude. Now considering Stanford? They offer Romanian.”  Earlier that Spring when Morgan was out on location, working and helping her big sister, they stopped at Stanford on the way home. Morgan was quite smitten with the possibility of attending the law school there.  Morgan always had ultimate faith in herself, and was positive that if she knew the requirements, she could meet them.  Morgan answered her friend, “Yesss!!” And she responded, “Doing some school research. Seeing what I can find. =D.”

Detective Glassmire was coming out for a stakeout, naturally we were kept in the dark about actual arrival and departure times, but he agreed to text me on the way out.  There was no way I was waiting until the next day to find out what if anything had happened. At 2:06 am I could not contain myself any longer, and sent a text to him, “Backyard motion detector light going on and off – same time as last night.” Detective Glassmire texts back, “Okay, we did leave at 12:45 am, and we did notice that the backyard motion detector did go on and off twice while we were watching it.  Definitely was not us at that time, as we were very far from that light.  Otherwise quiet while we were there.”  I texted back, “OK better luck next time.  Morgan never alerted us to anything on her window tonight.”  Detective Glassmire texted back, “Okay, that’s where we focused on, we will be in touch soon, have a good night.”  I texted back, “You too.”

This was the night (the only night that I know of) that they did a stake out to try to catch the stalker.  Detective Glassmire the next day suggested that maybe we had a faulty motion light and that’s why it would go on and off in the middle of the night.  So Steve swapped it for another light that we could also see from our room, but hadn’t been going on and off, now that that light was put where the other light had been it still did the same thing, so it wasn’t defective – what we didn’t know at the time was that this was the area that was being triggered, because this is where the stalker was getting on to our roof!!!

Today it is October 5, 2012 – and I’m sure I’ve said this before, but it will always bear saying again.  Months after Morgan was murdered we found evidence that the stalker had been gaining access to our roof from that exact area that would set off that motion light, he would run over the berm, towards the back of our house, and climb up the Aspen tree that was leaning right up against the back of our house.  Once up on the roof he had the advantage to be able to see up and down the streets, as well as the advantage to hide where the roof comes together – it created a perfect hiding place for him.  He could also lean over the edge of the roof, body against the metal gutter over Morgan’s room, and see in to her room, or dangle something down to tap or bang on her window, ever eluding the Sheriff’s and all others.  He was “getting off” in being able to make fools out of the Sheriffs.

Except for one, Rhonda’s little dog Sammie, next door, that used to bark in the middle of the night at his window that faced Morgan’s side of the house.  But, unfortunately dogs can’t talk (or at least most of us don’t understand what they are saying), so we never knew that the stalker was on our roof.  But the little dog knew, and he tried to tell us…so many times.

October 2, 2011 – Day 62 of Morgan’s Stalking

This morning at 6:15 Morgan is awoken by loud stones against her window, the loudest it has ever been (look at the suspects hours below – he was on his break, only minutes from our house at this time!) She presses the panic button immediately and Steve is at her room seconds later, and then he is out the front door.  I rush to her room and Morgan is beside herself.  She thinks that it is a wonder he did not break the window and we both look at all of her windows very carefully for cracks.  We don’t see any, and Steve comes back in to report that he did not see anything, and Keenan’s car is not at Brooke’s dad’s house.  He is going for a drive to record the rest of the neighborhood, and wants both of us to stay inside while he is gone.

We are all far too keyed up for sleep and wind up in the kitchen for a family talk.  I have no notes about what we did talk about that morning, but I can safely guess that it revolved around stalkers and stalking.

After breakfast we go outside and find two questionable footprints on Morgan’s side of the house.  I see them, but Steve does not.  Again, I would like to mention that we had 6 cameras up around our house, but they could not cover every area of the house – it was impossible…so there were holes in the coverage.  We spent some time looking at the live video and Steve positioning on that side of the house, and realized the spot where the prints were is in a “hole” between the two cameras.  Steve aims both cameras at Morgan’s windows and we thoroughly water the side and rake it smooth.  We had been lax in this step since the video cameras went in and we agree to be more attentive to every detail.  Now that we have a detective, if we get a really good print he will cast it.  I am very angry with myself for not keeping up with this “chore”.

Later that morning, right around 10:35 am, a neighbor calls and tells us that Keenan drove up at 10:30 am and, after watching him get out of his car and go in the house, he did not have the “range bag” this time.

Morgan goes out with her puppy and texts me later at 9:51 pm “On my way”.  I have been trying to find an app for my phone that Morgan wanted me to get and I text her back, “Is the app called happy trees?”  She answers, “Hills.” And I tell her, “Ok thanks and I’ll watch for you.”  She tells me “K” and is pulling in the driveway a short while later.

We had all been up since early morning and were tired and went to bed.  At 10:31 pm one of the back motion lights went off, this had been such a pattern, which was followed by something on Morgan’s windows that I went right out into the yard with a flashlight, leaving the bedroom door open.  As soon as I was out in the yard I heard the motion alarm for the driveway going off in the room.  I thought whoever was in the back had gone straight to the front and across our driveway.  Most every time we had seen someone in the driveway they were always going from my office side of the house to the garage side of the house and I went back through the house to see what was out front.  There was nothing and I went back in to discuss with Steve some counter measure for this pattern, it had happened too many times.

Today is September 30, 2012 – A thought about cameras.  If ours had been mounted away from our house looking at our house from some distance they would have proven far more useful.  From a practical standpoint it sounds difficult, but mounting cameras on neighboring houses and the back of the back yard, all aimed at the house seems like a good start.  Our cameras were mounted under the eves of the house which put them about 3’ from the outside wall and as our house had really high ceilings they were about 14’ from the ground.  And reviewing all the cameras we had, in case I have not talked about this, pretty much impossible to see it all.  The video was always on, so it was six cameras times 24 hrs each, every day.  Unless we wanted to focus on a specific place in a certain time range it was difficult.  There was a motion detecting feature that we have found was less than perfect in catching our stalker, but it was very helpful in ruling out wind or animals as a cause for an alarm on one of the motion detectors.  We now know the cameras were not catching any images because the stalker was on our ROOF!  He was coming from above and the cameras were not pointed up there.
