November 3, 2011 – Day 94 of Morgan’s stalking. Back to the rocks…

It was a clear night with only tiny patches of snow remaining. Poor Morgan did not get much sleep. The alarm on our next door neighbor, Rhonda’s side of the house, goes off shortly after midnight and then rocks (that’s what we think we are hearing) on Morgan’s windows hit off and on for the rest of the night until sunrise. Morgan doesn’t want to call the deputies, so she just covers her head with a pillow, and tries to ignore the harassment.

First thing in the morning Morgan has an anonymous text message from 970.xxx.xxxx. She it too tired to make her morning classes, so she sleeps in, and talks to Detective Glassmire about the text message. He wants her to send another letter about that particular incident and then he will talk to her about it when he comes to see her over the weekend. That letter becomes one of the group of letters sent on November 5.

Morgan’s letter to Sheriff:
11.5.2011
Dear Detective Rob Glassmire & Detective Meagan Alstatt,
This Thursday morning @ ____ am I was woken up by a text message from a phone number I do not recognize. I immediately thought it had to be the stalker since it said:
Great pic of you in the morning. You will just never be a morning person like your Dad.
I had changed my Facebook profile picture to a sleepy looking face resting on my bed. Since I used to be friends with Brooke Harris a long time ago she has my cell # from way back then, and Keenan might have gotten it from Brooke Harris. The phone the text came from was # 970-xxx-xxxx I responded, “Who is this?” But never received an answer.
Morgan Jennifer Ingram
case #11-20197

Morgan’s friend, on his own, snaps and can no longer take what is happening to Morgan.  He decided this is getting to be too much, and no matter what the sheriff’s say about staying out of it and letting them handle it, he decides he will try to talk with Keenan by sending him a FB private message warning him to stop stalking Morgan, and to leave the Ingram’s alone. The conversation quickly degrades into two young men verbally sparring about who is going to do what to whom.  Evidently at one point Keenan tells him he is out of the state right now, but when he gets back he will decide if this friend of Morgan’s is worth the trouble or not. The verbal argument was just this one time, and attempts to get copies of exactly what was said had proved unsuccessful, but I now have a copy of that conversation.

Our neighbor Elliott lets me know that he has heard that Keenan is out of the state for the week and has been gone for at least two days, he is not positive, but says he will verify it for me. This would confirm what Morgan’s friend has been told by Keenan.  As for my concern about Elliott popping up whenever something happened, this could have been purely a neighbor trying to be helpful, but it was sounding more like pure gossip, and a certain desire to know from me what had really happened.  I decided that I would share nothing with him about the video recorded of the walkabout, which was easy because he never really asked.  As it was we had not really gone over it at any length so far.  Only enough to know that there was a person who had left the footprints and it looked like a “she,” and it looked like Brooke Harris.  It seemed completely diverse from our other video and camera photo captures, which made perfect sense now, because now it appeared Keenan was out of the state anyway.

Elliott had seen Steve walking the deputy around house and down the street.  Elliott came across the street and tells me he wishes I would have called him before the footprints started to melt, because he has a high resolution camera that he could have used to take very detailed pictures and they could have proved useful later. He wanted me to call him right away if anything like this happened again.  Then he asked about the video.  I told we had not had a chance to really look at it yet as we had just been so under the gun with everything else, which was not completely true, but pretty true.

Perhaps I was being too obvious, or maybe I didn’t care if it was completely obvious.  But from Elliott’s reaction I could tell he was not happy that I was withholding from him.  I weighed that possibility for a moment, and decided it was probably for the best.  I decided right then to not give in to any more requests from Elliott for information, and see how that went.  It did not last long.

See below, the copy of an email I received later that day from the felony stalking detective, Sheriff Glassmire.  The “flyer” he is talking about is a flyer he designed for all local law enforcement (police & sheriffs) to be on the lookout, with a picture of Keenan, a picture of his car and information about the victim “Morgan” and what to do if seen following her, or if he is seen by our house, etc.  It had our address, along with some other information, this is what Detective Glassmire had told me.  Here is the email from him to me on this day:

Subject: RE: case #11-20197

Toni,

Thanks for the update. Deputy Hoover told me about the footage you were able to get. I did get those flyers out to our patrol staff. With the exception of a few that were not there ( I will email it to them) everybody is up to speed on the case. This should help alleviate any confusion if a deputy who has been in the Parachute area for a while has to rotate to the Carbondale area. I prefaced by saying, “keep this flyer in your car, you may not even go to Carbondale for months, but when you do you will have this information.”

Also, the text message, in my opinion, very important. It’s also very suspicious and creepy. I will be following up on that. I used a law enforcement data base to check on the number and it did not show anything. This isn’t too unusual, especially for prepaid cell phones. I did check our sheriff’s office records and a person in 2008 was using that phone number that lives in Rifle. This is definitely a lead that we will be following up on. Does he still have that phone number? Does he have a criminal history? Where does he currently live? Like I said the only profile we have on this guy is from an accident in 2008.

I also think it might be feasible to request for a search warrant for the phone records for that phone number. This is a very lengthy process. Once served to the company they have up to 30 days to provide the information. Unfortunately, companies like Verizon, Sprint, ect, often take far to longer than the 30 days and the enforcement process is very difficult. Regardless, it is a lead that I will be following up on.

If you receive additional texts do not reply. We will take photos of the text message(s) on Sunday. I’ll also do a little bit more research on the person in Rifle. Due to the old file I’m hesitant to think that it is him. I also don’t have too much information on him. Also, as investigators, we have to be careful how we introduce a new name or potential suspect to the victims. I’m going to talk to Megan and see if she thinks there is a forensically sound method to see if you recognize the person. I’m thinking something along the lines of a photo lineup. I’ll let you know on Sunday.

In the meantime, continue to call, text, or email me day or night. Stay strong.

Rob

October 27, 2011 – Day 87 of Morgan’s Stalking

Wylah on a leash out in the grass

Morgan had settled into a routine with her puppy, in order to avoid accidents, she got up whenever the puppy first whined in the morning, and took her out in the backyard to go potty.  This was working well, and Wylah was sleeping in a little later all the time, and Morgan was really happy about that.

This particular morning Wylah decided that at 5:45 am she has to go out.  The sun has not even begun to get up at this time, and it was still very dark out.  Morgan has an uneasy feeling as she opens the door to let her puppy out, and she stops (intuition kicking in), putting Wylah on a 15 foot leash, that is on the floor right by the door.  Then she stays right in the doorway, letting her out the back sliding glass door, so Wylah can have her run of the grass, and reach her favorite spot.

As Morgan crouches, and watches her puppy frolic she becomes aware of something – it’s on her left side toward Rhonda’s house.  She looks and sees a person, a male, dressed in all black, standing just outside the 3 foot high fence between our BBQ and a post holding up the roof.  He was not there when she came to the door, he has just appeared.  He is standing still and watching her.  He does not say a word.  She reels the leash in, dragging her puppy as fast as she can, and sliding the door closed with her knee at the same time.  There is a trail of urine across the patio, and into the house from the puppy.  She closes, and locks the door, and runs to our bedroom doorway and drops to the floor. She is so badly shaken and scared.

She sat there, in our doorway, because from there she could see most of the house and all four doors.  He was gone now.  She could look over at the conga drums, by the door, and see a pepper spray can and a mag light sitting there.  There was also another pepper spray on the kitchen bar top, and one up by the front door.  She sat there for an hour with her puppy on her lap, and watched out the windows for something moving.

Steve woke up, and immediately wondered what was wrong.  Morgan told him what had happened, and burst out crying, I woke up hearing her explaining to her dad.  Steve can see how upset and frightened she still is, and holds her.  Wylah whines and paws at them.  I am furious and looking for somewhere to aim my furry.

I call the sheriffs department, can’t remember if it was Detective Glassmire or dispatch that I spoke to.  I don’t remember anyone coming, but sometimes the memories are sharp and written down in black and white, and others, they are more of a blur, like this morning was.

We had a motion detector for exactly that area, and the night before Steve had taken it inside to repaint it a camouflage color. What the hell? How did the stalker know the detector was gone? Steve thought when painted the detectors would be harder to see, at least they wouldn’t be bright white, and not so obvious that way.  But is that all this took?  We take the detector down for one night and there he is the next morning in the area the detector would have alerted us to.  Does he watch this closely, or was it a coincidence?

Steve and I avoided the spot he was standing, because we had some delusional fantasy the officers with crime scene kits might show up, and thoroughly investigate the area.  Nobody came, nobody was coming.  Steve and I got on hands and knees and searched ourselves – any little speck of something.  Of course I have been since told that if I had found anything I would have destroyed the chain of custody.  Why would I be surprised, nobody will ever look, but if I do and find something, it’s worthless as evidence.  That is what I mean when I say the laws favor the stalkers.  So, as I understand it now we could have shot him if he were two steps closer, and up on the porch, but if I pick up his cigarette butt, no good.  I am telling you all of this to try to help others out there – before this happened to our family we had no idea of how to handle this type of a situation.

Steve waits a while and asks Morgan if she knew who it was.  She is not certain, she thinks it is Keenan, but she also does not want to try and picture him, so Steve tells her not to, that it is over now, and she made an unbelievably good choice by following her intuition and letting Wylah out on a leash, and staying inside the house.

This afternoon I saw my therapist again, and again, she was really helpful – she tries to help me figure out how we can help this situation by catching Morgan’s stalker – she throws out new ideas that are really helpful.  As expected, nobody is coming over because Morgan is not 100% sure that it was Keenan that she saw, and if she were to just compose a letter and send it to the detective we were told that will be fine.

melancholy day

I tell Morgan about writing a letter and I could see the disappointment in her face.  I try to cheer her up, but it is too late.  That she feels like she is getting the brush-off is all too obvious.  We had a melancholy day together, and Morgan did a lot of knitting on the couch, with all the window curtains and blinds closed.  Our house is no longer bright and cheery – it’s now all about blocking out the prying eyes of a stalker.

Morgan went to see her friend later on to just get out of the house.  I was extra worried about her, but trying to remain calm.

I text Morgan to see when she is coming home, it’s now right before 10 pm, she is driving my car as usual and has her puppy with her.  She leaves Carbondale to head home on the “back” road, it is a two lane, county road, hill on one side, and a small drop off on the other.  It’s – County Road 100, Carbondale, Colorado – if you want to see it on Google maps.

As soon as she passes the first pull-off area, a car pulls in behind her, she thinks right away it is Keenan’s car, so she slows way down, so he will go around her, but he does not, he stays right behind her, no matter how much she slows down.

When she is going really slow another car catches up to both of them, and in the back window she can see the car’s headlights illuminate the car behind her, and she can see that in the car following her there is one person, a male, driving the car.  Once again she thinks it is Keenan, and she can see the car is green like his, but she is not 100% sure that it is him.

She speeds up, and no matter how slow or fast she goes, he is right behind her.  She turns left into our subdivision, and turns around to see the driver, it is Keenan, and for the first time she can say she is 100% sure.  Morgan races home, and she can tell that Keenan has continued on County Road 100.  She pulls up in the driveway.  She is extremely upset! Steve goes out into the street to be sure he didn’t change course to follow her home, but no one was there.

I called the sheriff’s dispatch and tell them what had just happened, and how Morgan was frightened and forgot to call until right before she got home, so as soon as I knew she was safe, I called them.  They explain to me that it is too late now, there is nothing they can do.  She needs to call 911 next time, while actually being followed, or if she sees someone that shouldn’t be there.

Morgan is extremely upset, and is crying.  She wants to know why it’s always up to her to do everything, while they do nothing.  I don’t have an answer for her.  Detective Glassmire sent me an email last night that I read at lunch.  He said how he knows how frustrating this is, but they are getting close to making an arrest.  And that was before what happened today – happened.

We all decide Morgan will no longer let her puppy out if it is dark out – she will wake us up to do it.  Morgan is getting really stressed over all of this happening – can’t sleep at night, and is always exhausted.  Morgan doesn’t want to be home, but she does not want to be forced from her home by this guy.  Steve again suggests that perhaps she should just go to her Godfather’s home in Hawaii.  Morgan says she can’t, she just can’t, school is not over yet, but will be soon.  We are really at a loss over what to do now.

Today is October 16, 2012 – When I reviewed the emails and notes and text messages, I had a thought.  This was a busy day of terrorizing from Morgan’s stalker, and no response from the sheriff’s, not one visit in person.  But the strange thing is our detective is laid up for a few days and if a stalker knew this and wanted to raise cain, today would have been the day. But that’s too far fetched isn’t it?  That would mean he knew, had some inside line.  I’m not saying the sheriffs were in on this, just that maybe intel was making it to the wrong ears without their knowledge…just a thought.

October 16, 2011 – Day 76 of Morgan’s Stalking – It’s on FaceBook

Roaring Fork River

Elliott (our neighbor across the street) saw me getting into my car, and ran over, as he had to tell me something – that he just saw on Keenan’s FaceBook that he is single, and not in a relationship.  I thank Elliott for making it “official.”   And I have another more important question for him.

Our detective is quite convinced that Keenan works at GM and he is a manager there.  So I ask Elliott if he is knows where Keenan works, and how sure he is about it.  Elliott once again says he works at the City Market in El Jebel, definitely, he has been in there when he is working.  He works the night shift.  He wonders why I wanted to know.  I told him I was getting conflicting stories, and in case it became important, I wanted to be as certain as I could.

Elliott wondered what the detectives were going to do now that he had moved away.  I was thinking the deputies had made progress with the fact he lived here, but it hadn’t seemed to matter to the detectives.  They had a different program going.  Morgan was all around town with her friends, calling me a few times to check in.  I really didn’t like that we had to do that, but I got nervous if I did not hear from her all day.

When Steve came home I told him about the conversation with Elliott and how Detective Glassmire had thought Keenan was working for GM.  It made perfect sense to Steve. One of them made a typo it’s really CM he said. CM for City Market, he wondered which one?  El Jebel, I told him. That’s less than a five minute drive, going the speed limit, he told me.  He could walk out the back door there and be here in five minutes easy.  Terrorize and be back to work before his break was over.

I could not wait to give Detective Glassmire this information, there must have been something they could make out of this.  Some trap, some way to catch him driving from there to here.  And now that he had broken up with Brooke, there was no reason for him to be here – interesting how he moved out right after the sheriffs kept stopping by her house to speak with him.  I told Steve that I wondered how long he had worked at City Market – because if he was there last summer too, then he could have been the Blue Creek stalker.  It was right across the county road from us – within walking distance.  I never even texted Morgan to bug her about coordinating when she came home.  It made sense in ways I had never thought of.  The detectives were obvious enough to spook him.  They would be drawing a bead on him and closing in.  So he either bolted for safety, or he just broke up with Brooke and moved on.  I wish I knew which it was.

October 5, 2011 – Day 65 of Morgan’s Stalking – Faces in the Sky

Faces in the Clouds

Cool rock formations from Hawaii and More

Morgan took this picture in Hawaii and I said, “What a cool rock formation,” and Morgan said, “Mom! – Look at all the faces in the clouds!!!”

In the wee hours of the morning, at 22 past midnight Morgan texts me “You aren’t still up, are you?” I was, and I feel like she caught me, I answer “Yes, why?” Morgan says, “Nevermind.” Now she’s really caught me and I ask her “Why are you still up?” Which is a silly question of course, 20-year-old girls stay up late. Before she had a stalker she would be up working on some project or watching movies or talking on her phone till way late all the time. Now she was tired and interested in a good nights sleep, as much as we were. Morgan does not answer, and I let it go at that.

At 1:12 am the motion light outside the back of our room goes on. I reach over for Steve, but he is already awake and grabs my arm before I can tap him. That startles me deeply, everything seems to startle me now. There is a crash noise right outside and Steve doesn’t bother with lights or clothes and just hops up and runs out our back door. I get up and lift the blinds. I don’t see anything, not even Steve. Which is a concern, but then I see him coming over the berm. He sees me and shakes his head.

When he’s back inside he tells me that he thought he saw something, maybe a man, hard to be sure. He went as far as over the berm and then he saw nothing, he just stood there and froze and waited for something to move, but the cold eventually convinced him to come back in. There is always a next time and we go to sleep.

Morgan calls me in the morning and wants to go see her doctor. She is in pain, her back has been hurting more and more. I think it was sleeping on the closet floor all that time, and Morgan thinks it is just stress. I told her, of course go see the doctor – she doesn’t miss class very often, so once is not going to be that big of a deal.

Morgan sends her teacher a text message, “I am going to run to the doctor this morning so I’m going to miss class. I’ll see you tomorrow!!” Her teacher texted back, “OK.”

She goes to see her doctor and he helps by realigning her back, tells her she has strained her hip and needs to be careful on it for a week or so until it really feels better. Dr. Jensen is a great holistic doctor and Morgan really trusts him.  She is so much happier when she gets home. I tell her that her deal with her dad to not wake me is off and I promise I won’t talk or call, but just to send me a blank text whenever there is a noise against her window that wakes her.  She is a tough sell, but finally agrees.

That night as we are going to bed I tell Steve the new plan with Morgan and he says I will never be able to do it. I tell him something like, just watch me. Then at 1 minute before 11:00 pm she sends me one bubble on my phone. I didn’t realize how hard it would be. I lie there having to know if it was a little noise or a big noise, or if she was sleeping soundly or lightly.  I want to know something, but a deal’s a deal, and I let her sleep. And then I lay there wide awake.

Today is October 3, 2012 – I miss Morgan a lot today, I move throughout my day for my job, but otherwise I feel like I am not doing enough for Morgan. I asked her friends to write something about Morgan when they get a chance, and her best friend wrote the most beautiful thing. I read it to Steve and he said, “True friends, so hard to find, and even harder to have taken away.” We know it’s hard for her friends to sit down and write something – they are still dealing with the loss, just like us. This past Saturday night we met with two of her friends and one of them said to us that it was the first time he could face us to talk about Morgan, because it hurt so much. We both miss her a little more right now.  I’m not sure why. The pain never goes away.  So many people are working hard to help her, and us – to get the truth out.  And I really want to tell them all thank you again, Morgan and Steve and I appreciate what you are doing so very much. We could not do what we are doing without all of your help, it means the world to us while we still continue to fight an uphill battle to try to get justice for Morgan.  It seems like there are also people out there that don’t care about the truth, they only want to be right, and for them I feel sorry, because the truth is there, and won’t change.

September 26, 2011 – Day 56 of Morgan’s stalking – we meet our detective

snow on Mount Sopris

After her classes, Morgan came home and just hung out and rested.  I worked and waited to meet our detective at 4:00 pm.  Steve came home early from work, and we laid out our array of papers for the meeting.

The detective called and he was running late, I told him we were all home and ready anytime, so that was fine.  Just before 5:00 pm we met, it was 56 days into Morgan’s stalking, and now it was officially a felony stalking case.  We hadn’t called the sheriffs on day one of the stalking, so it was actually more like around 52 days since the first call to the Garfield sheriffs, but they knew when it had first started.  The detective didn’t have the case number with him, but said he would get that to us once he got back to his office and looked it up.

We went over our records, showed him the cameras and the systems in place to protect Morgan.  He told us that not many people went to such lengths, and we could certainly file a claim, a compensation claim with the victim’s rights coordinator, and get reimbursed for at least part of what we were spending on all of our stuff.  That was nice to hear as it was a considerable expense so far, but we never did.  We were more hopeful about putting an end to all of this, and there had not been one in sight up until now, we all discussed exactly where this case was at this moment in time.

The detective had obviously talked with some of the deputies who had become our “regulars” on the case so far. He said Garfield County had a protocol of shifting the officers around to different areas of the county on a regular basis, and we did not have a group of the same two or three deputies, over time, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had met all of the patrol deputies eventually in the entire department.  He knew that the deputies so far had zeroed in on one person, but he said he was going to be revisiting everything and would, “go where the evidence led him.”  It was too late to cast any of the footprints or fingerprints, and at that time none of our pictures were clear enough to identify one exact person, so it could take a while.

Morgan explained the usual events, and how she had been followed, and was not certain when it had really began, but knew that since August 2 it had been pretty constant.  The detective asked her for suspects, and Morgan had one name for him, Keenan Vanginkel, we added a few more to the list, but those names we thought might be helping the stalker, and not actually the stalker.  She was downplaying her fear, and how upset she would get, so I felt I had to encourage her to tell the detective how she really felt as this was happening – that helped.  Morgan had built up a wall to what was going on, and when she let that down she instantly started to tear up, and almost cry, as she explained how she felt about what had been happening.  Morgan never liked to be thought of as weak, and it was uncomfortable to watch her struggle, but it had to come out.  I wondered if the detective was seeing the same thing I was.

After he left, Morgan could not get out of the house fast enough.  She was upset that she had shown a little weakness, and was now going to see her friends in Carbondale, where she could pretend everything was normal.  Steve and I talked about the meeting, and were not sure what to make of it, it was not what I had expected, but then I had nothing to compare it with either.

Steve texted Morgan at 7:35 pm, “Just left for dinner. Text me when you gonna come home cuz mom left her phone at home.”  Morgan answered, “Will do. :). “ Later, at 8:40 pm Steve texted again “We are home.”  Morgan came home at 10:00 pm and went to bed.  She didn’t say anything about the detective or her stalker.

In a replay of the last few nights, the motion detector went off at 10:43 pm, and I waited for another rock on Morgan’s window.  That did not happen, but I had heard noise outside our room, when Steve went to look, he didn’t find anything out of the ordinary, and we went to sleep.

(Police reports later show the “suspect” was not working this evening.  On 9.26.2011 he worked from 8:30 am – 12:59 pm & then from 1:30 pm – 5:27 pm)

Almost 2 years after Morgan’s murder we finally received the police reports (see this one supplemental below) – his date is incorrect – he called us on Sunday the 25th, but he did not meet with us until Monday the 26th:

Supplement Report #5 2011-20197

Print Date/Time: 10/01/2012 11:29 October 3, 2011

Garfield County Sheriff’s Office
ORI Number: CO0230000

A few weeks ago, I was advised of this case. It was further requested that I contact the victim family and consider putting up sheriff’s office issued wildlife cameras in an attempt to capture photos of the suspect(s).

On September 25, 2011, I met with the Ingrams at their home located at 62 Corral Dr. Carbondale, CO. We went over the case history. The Ingrams explained to me that the suspect(s) began to harass them in the first part of August 2011. Since then they have had a continuance presence by the suspect(s).

Activity will include small rocks being thrown at the house, scratching of the windows, and a known presence in their yard. The Ingrams have installed motion sensor lighting and wildlife cameras of their own.

On a regular basis, motion detectors will go off and the lights will turn on. Further evidence of suspect(s) activity will include shoe prints in a dirt area along the house. In one instance, outlined in Deputy Locklear’s previously submitted supplemental report, the Ingrams captured a photo of the suspect using one of their wildlife cameras. Deputy Locklear obtained the photo and submitted it into evidence. The photo depicts a male person but is not clear enough to show identity.

I requested that the Ingrams document every suspicious activity so that a log could be generated. Furthermore, I advised that the documentation would support a subsequent criminal prosecution.

I then took a tour of the home so I could learn the floor plan of the home. I also walked the exterior of the home. I then installed two wildlife cameras on the north side of the home. This area between the Ingram’s and the neighbor’s house is near where a lot of the activity is occurring. It is also the location of Morgan Ingram’s bedroom.
