A mission against #stalking – I feel like the first thing to do is to take it seriously, because as far as I can see not everyone really did in Morgan’s case

At a time when sheer frustration surrounded everything that was related to Morgan’s stalking, and death, I made a decision.  As soon as my waves of shock had passed, it dawned on me that I needed to do something about this in Morgan’s name.  I needed to tell Morgan’s story, with as many details as I could, so others could become aware of this multi-layered problem that was confronting Steve and I in trying to have her stalker still pursued, and her death investigated (because it never really was at all!).  It also quickly evolved into raising awareness of stalking, not only here in Garfield County, Colorado, but all around the world.

In response to the story of Morgan’s Stalking so many other victims over the last year have asked for advice, or told me about their own story, and unfortunately the same things ring true – law enforcement in their city or county did not, and will not take the danger seriously, and the victims are left to fend for themselves, scared for their lives!  This has to change.  Stalking is wrought with dangers, and needs to be dealt with effectively and swiftly, because it so easily blows out of control, even escalating to murder.

I could not allow this to happen to another girl, another family, and I wondered, what are the right answers to this multi-pronged dilemma?  Morgan had been stalked, and terrorized for four months, and then we found her dead in her bed, nothing about the crime scene looked normal, she looked like she had been posed, so many things were not right, but we were in shock, and were not asked any pertinent questions that we should have been asked in a murder investigation!  And here was a felony stalking victim, our daughter, dead.  And we had this horrible feeling that her death was being treated as if it had nothing to do with her stalking.  We tried to ignore this feeling, because the situation we had ended up in had us questioning everything.

A year and a half later it is far more apparent that Morgan’s sudden death, under suspicious circumstances, had been treated as if it had no relation to her stalking at all.  Does this make any sense at all?  The morning they took Morgan’s body away and informed us there would be an autopsy, we were told it was because she died under “suspicious circumstances, and they were treating everything as if it were a crime scene”, and I believed them at that time, I trusted them.  But as the smoke still cleared I can see that was really not the case at all.

In the weeks that passed after her death  we waited for the pathologist’s examination report and nothing was investigated except to look at pictures on her phone, read her texts, and read what she was writing on her computer.  They were investigating Morgan – not how she died.  Then the pathologist classified Morgan’s manner of death as natural causes, and the “brakes” were hit even harder.  For the next eight months that passed the Sheriff’s department had no reason to investigate natural causes, and as for her stalking case it seemed as if they did not need to do any more investigating, with no stalking victim left alive, there was no more stalking, leads dry up quickly and all too soon there was nothing to investigate – right?

Nothing “felt right” about Morgan’s death, and we had questions for many of reasons, apart from one of the main reasons – he wrote that her “natural death” was caused by a disease she never had, we also felt a strong need to know exactly what killed her, if this truly was a natural death, and if it could affect someone else in the family, young or old.  When Morgan’s long time Doctor at UCLA, a person we have great respect for, shocked us with her opinion that nothing was wrong with Morgan that would cause her sudden death, and then declare this was a homicide!  We were floored.

We naturally began to research this very seriously, and it was not long before we were told by a highly respected Forensic Pathologist that the level of one drug in her blood was not “insignificant” as the pathologist was claiming, but it was the cause of Morgan’s death.  And she did not even take this drug!

I kept asking more questions of more experts because the finding of Morgan’s death as natural was not only wrong there was absolutely no investigation going on except our own.  Which was raising questions for which there were no answers, and the pathologist did not like me questioning him, his findings, or asking him to talk to some of the experts that were assisting us, doctor to doctor, about his findings.  He then threatened me (I am a victim of the felony stalking as well as Morgan, so he was threatening a victim at the time) that he might have to take another look at her manner of death, as the blood levels were quite high, and the only reason he did not call it an accidental overdose, or suicide was that there were absolutely no pills or pill fragments in her stomach.

This concerned me deeply, except I was being told by others that I should not be worried, because there were no grounds that the pathologist could find for suicide, and he really should have put down “Undetermined” or “Homicide” and an investigation should have been opened.

An investigation – really?  Like law enforcement actually reviewing our camera footage the night of the murder, they took it, and booked it into evidence, but it was not reviewed – I guarantee you that, because later when we reviewed it we saw images from those cameras that same night.  Or like an investigation that takes evidence from the crime scene, like sheets, and pillows, and tests the substance found on her chest, and writes up a report.  And when told about items missing from her room the information becomes a report?  No, that never happened either.  I began to tell our felony stalking detective about the missing items within a few days of the crime, after the crime scene tape came off her bedroom door, and we were allowed back into her room – but no report was made.

Then seven months after her death, the pathologist had her gastric fluid tested without telling us.  The pathologist knew if anymore tests were to be run the other doctors assisting us would like to weigh in on what kind of tests could be added.  But this request was ignored, which is a problem because there were not a lot of samples left to test, and this particular test exhausted what was left.  To use up those samples without allowing other doctors to request certain tests to be done at the same time was not only wrong, but egregious.

Those test results, of which the pathologist based his claim of suicide, instead actually proves that she could not have committed suicide – that piece of knowledge that I now have can never change.  Not one soul in Garfield County government cared that the pathologist had threatened me – I know because of all the certified, return receipt letters that Steve, and I wrote to them that were not only ignored, they were never answered.

So what does a family in this situation do?  It looks, and feels to me like one of those stories about the “big blue wall”, right here in Garfield County.  Their approach to the problem is obviously to not answer us or do anything, in the hope that we just go away, and drop it.  Would you?  Honestly if this were your daughter would you just drop it and go away?  Emotionally it would probably be much easier.  What about the stalker/murderer?  Do you think he will just stop, and never do it again, and never hurt another girl?  He terrorized Morgan emotionally and psychologically for four months.  There have also been many revelations of similar instances going back many years.  So I don’t believe he will stop – they very rarely do, and I for one, in my heart, could never live with just walking away and not pursuing this.  It hurts, it makes me sick to my stomach at times, it makes Steve, and I both want to scream sometimes, but thanks to the huge support group we have we continue to pull each other up, and continue on with this quest.

My hope is that people all around the world listen, and believe other stalking victims, they need to be heard, and desperately want to be taken seriously.  If more people understand, and decide to take a stance to help as much as they can, we will be on the way to having fewer victims in the future.  When I hear about so many similar crimes being committed I can’t help but think that maybe there are not so many criminals, I think just one can do so very many crimes, if they are never caught, or never prosecuted.  So please, individually and collectively, let’s get even just one criminal off the street, and see how many lives can be spared in doing just that one act.

Another soul that was way too young to go, has left us with tears in our eyes…

The picture above is not one of Morgan’s pictures, but I wanted to put on this blog, and I can’t seem to get the copyright label off of it so please disregard that.  Thank you.

Today I am going to blog about something different from what happened to Morgan – this will not be about stalkers, and the dangers they produce, not about how law enforcement has to step up in some areas, and take stalking seriously.  No, unfortunately today I need to talk about losing a loved one, and how devastating it is for a family when it is a young person, whose life was just beginning on their own.

Last night we received a call about a 20-year-old boy named Adam, Morgan’s cousin.  We have known Adam since he was just a young child.  I remember his adorable freckled face, his exuberance, his constant questions, his sweetness, the years he was acting in movies, and felt so good to be making a paycheck, when he wasn’t even 16 years old yet.  I remember a lot of things about Adam, but the one thing I remember the most was how much we all loved him.

Crying for hours after I received the call I started to question, not out loud, but inside of me, why did this have to happen, and all of a sudden I felt an answer….I felt the same amazing warmth hit me from Morgan, that I have felt in the past, when crying and internally asking a question, and that instantly stopped my crying,  I knew she told me, “Adam is ok mom he is with me, and I will take care of him until his family sees him again someday.”  That helped me smile, because I do believe it to be true.  Morgan always took everyone under her wing, so to speak, and last night I believe she took Adam under her real wing to show him the immense love that is his forever now.

I’m sorry if this sounds a little corny – everyone believes something different, but for me this is the truth that I believe.  When I was 17 I went to the hospital for a procedure, and did not know the dye they would be injecting into me would cause an allergic reaction, and I would suddenly stop breathing after intense pain.  I felt the flurry of activity around me, but I was in extreme pain, and then all of a sudden I was hovering above my body in the little hospital room, in a bright light that felt like love, the intense pain was completely gone, while looking down at the frantic doctors, and nurses huddling over my body, trying to revive me.  I very clearly heard what they were saying, I saw what they were doing, everything was intensified, and I thought this was very odd, my back was up against the ceiling of the room, but I didn’t feel the ceiling against my back I just “knew” it was there, and I could see my body just lying on the table below not moving, , and the only thing I was thinking was, “Why are you doing this?”  I like it like this, because I was happy, I felt a bright white light, and love all around me, and there was no more pain in my body, “stop trying to revive me – is what I wanted to say!”  But they were successful in their efforts (I guess it wasn’t my time to go) and I was immediately thrust back into my body, and all the horrible pain came back.

The reason for telling you my near death story is to show you why I believe that Adam is with Morgan – after my experience of almost passing over at age 17 I never feared death after that.  I knew that at the time of death the pain stops, and you are wrapped in love and a brightness that makes you feel happy.  We will all miss you Adam, so very much – until we see you again remember we all think of you with the love you shared with us all!

I would like to share another #stalking story with you…

I would like to share this story that I just received from another stalking victim that is extremely brave to want to share it with others:

OK – my ex husband we will call him J. we were married in 2006 and divorced in 2007. He was severely abusive then, and when I left him I spent 36 days in a coma, and 14 more days in the hospital. I had part of my skull removed to let my brain swell. I had to do a lot of rehabilitation therapy and I still have a limp when I get tired. While we were married before the abuse started I began to discover lies that he was telling starting off with him being a marine scout sniper having served in Iraq. I discovered that was a lie when he told me he was getting the congressional metal of honor sent to him through the mail. lol. Well I confronted him and he beat me for the first time. I made the excuses, and all of that and continued dealing with his lies and abuse. Well I found out that he was stalking his ex-wife who had my same name. well I kicked him out and he beat me up, my parents found me and he had disappeared. When I woke up in the hospital and was able to reclaim most of my memories I got a divorce and he had several warrants listed for his arrest including impersonating a marine, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder and 2 counts of manslaughter, I was 5 months pregnant with twins and lost them and have since had to have a hysterectomy due to the damage he caused. I am 30 and turn 31 in June and have no biological children. He has not been found, but has managed to get my number that I have changed at least 20 times, I moved 45 miles away and am remarried, but he has come to our small town looking for me, luckily no one will tell him where I am. He has since had additional warrants issued for impersonating a police officer, 2 more counts of assault against others, stalking from me and is wanted in order to be questioned in a murder. The cops seem not to be able to find him, but he can find me – I don’t understand that. I have shown them where he and his family live yet they still won’t pick him up and I am not sure why. I just want everyone to realize that no matter what, that first of all if your relationship is built on lies (as mine was from everything from military to his jobs etc. ) then get out as soon as you can and second if there is any harassment do not get a restraining order get a protective order. I went so far as to let the cops hear a recorded conversation between him and I where he threatened to kill me and kill anyone including cops that got in his way. Before I moved I had several of the same signs as Morgan did knocks on my windows being followed, and it escalated to slashed tires and broken windshields to spray painting death threats on my house and car. As I have said I have moved away and he doesn’t know where exactly I live in our small town, and I have since gotten my concealed carry permit, and my husband makes sure anywhere I drive that I have a gun, and when I am anywhere else I have knives. I commend you for putting Morgan’s story out there, and all of the other stalking victims for sharing with us. Honestly if it can help or save even one person then it counts, and I think that we all need to go past the state level and have federal laws. Thank you for putting my story out and you and your family are in my prayers

No stalker, murderer, demon, or anyone can break the bond between a parent and a child…no one!

The Cord

by Unknown Author

We are connected,
My child and I, by
An invisible cord
Not seen by the eye.

It’s not like the cord
That connects us ’til birth
This cord can’t been seen

by any on Earth.

This cord does it’s work
Right from the start.
It binds us together
Attached to my heart.

I know that it’s there
Though no one can see
The invisible cord
From my child to me.

The strength of this cord
Is hard to describe.
It can’t be destroyed
It can’t be denied.

It’s stronger than any cord
Man could create
It withstands the test
Can hold any weight.

And though you are gone,
Though you’re not here with me,
The cord is still there
But no one can see.

It pulls at my heart
I am bruised…I am sore,
But this cord is my lifeline
As never before.

I am thankful that God
Connects us this way
A mother and child
Death can’t take it away!

Some people wonder why Steve, and I would go through reliving our daughter’s stalking and murder every day – the pain is immense, but what Morgan herself was forced to go through, and endure was so much worse, and we are not the type of people who can ever forget what happened to our daughter, and just walk away from the injustice, arrogance and plain old lies that continue to this day.

Even more important in the greater context of our responsibilities to the world.  If we were to give up then that would mean leaving a predator out on the streets to do it again – they do not just stop.  Morgan had a stalker, we have pictures, footprints, she saw him, I saw him.  He did not cease to exist when she was killed.

And I say killed with very careful measure, Morgan was killed because Forensic Professionals from all walks of life have donated their time to her case to come to a conclusion based upon their combined knowledge – and they all agree with one another, except that is with Dr. Kurtzman.

Just in case you have missed this point in the Blog of Morgan’s Stalking. The contracted forensic pathologist who performed her autopsy, in two hours I believe, taking none of the samples required by law, the contracted pathologist freely admitted his lack of experience or expertise with certain aspects of Morgan’s death, and he indicated a strong willingness to hear from, “Experts out on the coast from the larger hospitals that see this kind of thing far more often than I, and have a lot of experience with it.”

Now I don’t know if Dr Kurtzman thought we were kidding or what the problem was, but as soon as doctors from UCLA started to weigh in on Morgan’s death, the promise to listen vaporized even faster that all of Morgan’s valuable jewelry on the night she was killed.

The same night (Brooke’s friend that was living with her 3 houses down from us at the time) Hannah Hurlocker’s facebook entries said:

gunna make some moneyyy niggas! Share · December 2, 2011 at 11:18 am · the morning we found Morgan’s body and her valuable jewelry was missing.

And as to why Hannah was in such an all fired hurry to set up a ride out of town right before Morgan’s death, maybe that could be a lead to investigate?

Back to the last conference call conversation we had with Dr. Kurtzman.  Up until that phone call, and actually conversations after, Detective Glassmire had a very good habbit of recording the conversation so words would not be forgotten.  I really hope he did not “forget” to record that conversation, it was certainly one of the more important for Morgan, and this was her case after all.  Just to be clear, other doctor’s and forensic pathologists pursuing justice for Morgan, continued to try to communicate with Dr. Kurtzman until, one by one, they were all cut off.  Steve and I stopped talking to him on advice from one of the doctors, establishing the fact that he was not willing to hear anything from others with more expertise on certain subjects than himself, Dr. Kurtzman did that all by himself.

Other professionals were willing, and very able to correct the mistakes being made in the death of Morgan, but Dr. Kurtzman had no desire to listen.  Just look at the last PER, he still violates Morgan’s HIPAA rights, claims facts long ago established to the contrary in arriving at her cause of death. And as I have recently learned, he bears responsibility for the crime scene investigation under Colorado Law.  The one that was “so thoroughly botched.”  Morgan deserved better, as does the next victim of stalking that suddenly dies in Garfield County, Colorado.

No that after what we have seen, and been subjected to, Steve and I could never live with ourselves if we walked away (like law enforcement has chosen to do for the stalker who hasn’t gone anywhere).  Morgan did not want to die the way she was forced to, and she would do whatever she could to help another person facing a similar tragic ending.  That is without question, because that is how she conducted her life.

Yes, we are, unfortunately, at this point signing up for that task often called,  “fighting the establishment,” how we could stand on opposite sides of the issue called stalking is really beyond me, but we are.  I live to see stalkers and perverts/peeping toms arrested to face their day in court.  Meanwhile, the Detectives state they have “run out of leads” so the case is closed until they have more leads, and then Sheriff goes on TV and says he will never open the case into Morgan’s death.  Cities across our country, and even neighboring countries have arrested, and prosecuted tormentors for driving a victim to suicide, Steve and I are quite certain it is even more sinister than that, but if GarCo wants to hide behind the suicide – why not open an investigation, and arrest the tormentor, as so many others do?  Why is that too, not a crime here?  Or did the Sheriffs department know they so thoroughly botched the crime scene it was best to just walk away?

For Steve and I it is simple, It may take everything we have and then some, but we understand material things are not the important thing in life – human life is.  For another young woman to have the chance to live on is far more important to us.

I believe things happen for a reason – we may never really know the reasons, and outcomes can change depending on the actions taken by those involved, or even those who were not involved, but choose to become involved, for the right reasons, to help. Steve and I intend to change outcomes for the better for others.

Thomas Jefferson said, “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.”

I believe (just like in everything) there are good, and there are bad people in this world, just like there are good people in government, and there are bad people in government.  But the fact remains that our government passes laws that they believe will help people, and if our own local government, and law enforcement agencies do not follow those laws then what are we left with?  I believe they are required to follow those laws and the people of this county, and all other counties that see that those laws are not being followed should do something about it.  Write certified, return receipt letters to your Councilman, your District Attorney, your Sheriff’s Department, your Coroner’s office, your Governor, your Attorney General’s office, your State Legislators (some of which actually wrote the laws that are on the books in your State) and ask why certain laws are being broken and how do they intend to change this for the better of their citizens.  The power of the pen, along with the power of many people can, and will make a difference.  If you would like the information of the people to contact, along with the laws that have been broken, and a draft letter to look at please write to me on this blog as a comment, and I will answer back with all pertinent information…we can all make a difference!
