STALKED?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The National Center for Victims of Crime <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncvc.org\/src\">www.ncvc.org\/src<\/a> list the following information.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em> I wish we had known about this while Morgan\u2019s stalking was happening, so in order to raise awareness, in parenthesis I have written in my own notes to share with you.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Stalking is a series of actions that make you feel afraid or in danger <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Stalking is serious, often violent, and can escalate over time<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Stalking is a crime<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>You are not to blame for a stalkers behavior<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Some things stalkers do:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Repeatedly call you, including hang-ups.<\/li>\n<li>Follow you and show up wherever you are. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(this did happen to Morgan, multiple times)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Send unwanted gifts, letters, cards, or e-mails.<\/li>\n<li>Damage your home, car, or other property. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(this happened to us after Morgan\u2019s murder &#8211; her stalker stalked us)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Monitor your phone calls or computer use. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(we believe this is how Morgan\u2019s stalker always knew exactly where she was and when she would be home)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Use technology, like hidden camera or global positioning systems (GPS), to track where you go. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(we believe this happened to Morgan)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Drive by or hang out at your home, school, or work. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(Morgan\u2019s stalker would drive by her on her way out of school and was constantly monitoring her at her home)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Threaten to hurt you, your family, friends, or pets. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(Morgan was fearful for her puppy and we believe her stalker did try to poison her puppy, but we were able to intervene and save her)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Find out about you by using public records or on-line search services, hiring investigators, going through your garbage, or contacting friends, family, neighbors, or co-workers. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><i>(After Morgan\u2019s murder we moved, but her stalker found us.\u00a0 Steve went to roll the garbage cans down our long driveway the morning of the trash pick up, and noticed the trash can that had been full the night before was completely empty\u2026these trash cans were not by the street, they were up a long driveway up against our house\u2026someone took our trash)<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Other actions that control, track, or frighten you.<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> <i><span style=\"color: #800080;\">(Morgan\u2019s stalker tapped and banged on her window to create fright, he pushed in the buttons on our front door lock to use the sound to create fright, he ran around our house setting off the motion lights and alarms over and over again right after\u00a0the sheriffs would leave to let us know he was still there, he showed up in our backyard, standing and staring at her only 10 ft away, in the dark of the night, when she went to let her puppy out to go potty\u2026terrifying her, he was on our roof, plus so many more things\u2026stalkers try to take away your life in so many different ways)<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Stalking is unpredictable and dangerous \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>No two stalking situations are alike<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>There are no guarantees that what works for one person will work for another, yet you can take steps to increase your safety<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Things you can do:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are in <b>Immediate danger<\/b>, call 911<\/li>\n<li>Trust your <b>Instincts<\/b>.\u00a0 Don\u2019t downplay the danger.\u00a0 If you feel you are unsafe, you probably are.<\/li>\n<li>Take <b>threats<\/b> seriously.\u00a0 Danger generally is higher when the stalker talks about suicide or murder, or when a victim tries to leave or end a relationship.<\/li>\n<li>Contact a crisis hotline, <b>victim services agency<\/b>, or a domestic violence or rape crisis program.\u00a0 They can help you devise a safety plan, give you information about local laws, refer you to other services, and weigh options such as seeking a protection order.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a <b>safety plan<\/b>, including things like changing your routine, arranging a place to stay, and having a friend or relative go places with you.\u00a0 Also, decide in advance what to do if the stalker shows up at your home, work, school, or somewhere else.\u00a0 Tell people how they can help you.<\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t communicate <\/b>with the stalker or respond to attempts to contact you.<\/li>\n<li>Keep <b>evidence<\/b> of the stalking.\u00a0 When the stalker follows you or contacts you, write down the time, date, and place.\u00a0 Keep e-mails, phone messages, letters, or notes.\u00a0 Photograph anything of yours the stalker damages and any injuries the stalker causes.\u00a0 Ask witnesses to write down what they saw.<\/li>\n<li>Contact the <b>police<\/b>.\u00a0 Every state has stalking laws.\u00a0 The stalker may also have broken other laws by doing things like assaulting you or stealing or destroying property.<\/li>\n<li>Consider getting <b>a court order<\/b> that tells the stalker to stay away from you.<\/li>\n<li>Tell <b>family, friends, roommates, and co-workers<\/b> about the stalking and seek their support.\u00a0 Tell security staff at your job or school.\u00a0 Ask them to help watch out for your safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re stalked you might:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feel <b>fear<\/b> of what the stalker will do.<\/li>\n<li>Feel <b>vulnerable<\/b>, unsafe, and not know who to trust.<\/li>\n<li>Feel <b>anxious<\/b>, irritable, impatient, or on edge.<\/li>\n<li>Feel <b>depressed<\/b>, hopeless, overwhelmed, tearful, or angry.<\/li>\n<li>Feel <b>stressed<\/b>, including having trouble concentrating, sleeping, or remembering things.<\/li>\n<li>Have <b>eating problems<\/b>, such as appetite loss, forgetting to eat, or overeating.<\/li>\n<li>Have <b>flashbacks<\/b>, disturbing thoughts, feelings, or memories.<\/li>\n<li>Feel <b>confused, frustrated, or isolated<\/b> because other people don\u2019t understand why you are afraid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>These are common reactions to being stalked.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If someone you know is being stalked, <b>you can help<\/b>.\u00a0 Listen, show support.\u00a0 Don\u2019t blame the victim for the crime.\u00a0 Remember that every situation is different, and allow the person being stalked to make choices about how to handle it. \u00a0Find someone you can talk to about the situation. \u00a0Take steps to ensure your
