COVA needs your assistance in contacting your U.S. Representative or Congressman\/Congresswoman’s Office and vocalizing your support for the proposed Victims’ Rights U.S. Constitutional Amendment for Crime Victims!\u00a0 It is time to rally the troops and support what we all believe in and work for!<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n\n
SIGN A PETITION AND\/OR CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE<\/strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>There is an online petition supporting the Victims’ Rights Amendment on the NVCAP website.\u00a0 There’s a “Sign Petition” link on the Web site:\u00a0\u00a0www.nvcap.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Please encourage everyone you know to sign the petition and put a link to the petition (http:\/\/www.nvcap.org\/phpPETITION\/index.php<\/a>) on your agency’s website. \u00a0We need to get hundreds\/thousands of signatures!<\/p>\n

CALL:<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>As always, paying\u00a0\u00a0their own way,\u00a0Collene, along with nationally known crime victims attorney Steve Twist,\u00a0went to D.C.\u00a0this month. \u00a0Excitingly, they were able to get a commitment from the Chair of the Judiciary Committee, Lamar Smith,\u00a0 \u00a0that if we obtain 100 Representatives\/Congressmen\/Congresswomen\u00a0\u00a0(we already\u00a0have\u00a012) to co-sponsor the\u00a0proposed\u00a0Victims’ Rights U.S. Constitutional Amendment, they will take\u00a0it to the floor\u00a0of the House of Representatives for a vote.\u00a0\u00a0We have 435 Representatives\/Congressmen\u00a0\/Congresswomen\u00a0\u00a0in the U.S. House of Representatives\u00a0to draw from, therefore we should be able to accomplish our goal.<\/p>\n

We victims have\u00a0worked and waited a long time for this opportunity to help balance the justice system!\u00a0 We would like to make our goal and stimulate a vote prior to the election.\u00a0\u00a0We feel<\/em>\u00a0 it important that our representatives openly declare in their vote if they support only the criminals having rights in our Constitution or whether they feel victims\u00a0should be treated equally and fairly!\u00a0 Hopefully\u00a0you are ready to “stand on the gas” and get your Representative\/Congressman\u00a0<\/em>\/Congresswoman and any other folks\u00a0who can contact their representatives to become a co-sponsor of 2012 H.J. Res. 106, introduced March 26, 2012<\/em>.<\/p>\n

If we who have lived it and are knowledgeable crime victims don’t make it happen, no one else will!\u00a0 Don’t let future victims down. Thirty years ago, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan’s Victims’ Task Force said the Constitution must be changed to include victims’ rights. Had others before us done what we’re committingto do, we all would have lived much better lives. Let’s change history and do it for others.\u00a0 We have attached the “Directory of the U.S. House of Representatives” with the states in alphabetical order so\u00a0you\u00a0can\u00a0\u00a0move forward.<\/p>\n

Make a call to your U.S. Representative\/Congressman\u00a0\/Congresswoman’s Office staff\u00a0 and\u00a0ask\u00a0to speak to their Legislative Aid.<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0When the intern answers the phone:<\/p>\n

“Hi,\u00a0\u00a0my name is _____________ and I’m a victim of violent crime\u00a0(or I know people who have been victims.)<\/p>\n

The reason for my call today is to respectfully ask that Rep.\/Congressman\u00a0\/Congresswoman)\u00a0\u00a0________\u00a0 would consider co\u00a0–\u00a0sponsoring\u00a02012 House Joint Resolution 106, which is a U.S. Constitutional Amendment\u00a0\u00a0to protect the rights of crime victims.”<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0So if they say\u00a0they will pass the message along:<\/p>\n

Then you may want to ask: “Is there a legislative aid (LA) who would handle this type of call?”<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0And they would generally say “yes,” and look for the name. When they give the name:<\/p>\n

a.\u00a0Get the correct spelling of the name (for future reference\u00a0and\u00a0for email purposes because all House emails are\u00a0\u00a0(\u00a0FirstName.LastName@mail.house.gov<\/a>). \u00a0Many times they offer the email address which is a good double check of the correct spellings of names.<\/p>\n

b. \u00a0Also, ask to be connected to their voice mail to leave a message as an initial cold call exposure so when the follow-up email comes they will recognize it. \u00a0The voice mail message could be:<\/p>\n

“Hello, my name is ____________ and sadly I know the horrors of crime and the imbalance of our justice system,\u00a0______________. \u00a0The reason for my call today is to respectfully ask that Rep.\/Congressman\u00a0\/Congresswoman\u00a0\u00a0__________________\u00a0\u00a0co-sponsor\u00a02012 House Joint Resolution 106, which is a U.S. Constitutional Amendment\u00a0to protect the rights of crime victims.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you would care to return\u00a0my\u00a0call, my number is _____________or you may get additional information at\u00a0nvcap.org<\/a>\u00a0[generally using the N-as in Nancy, V as in Victor….for clarity]. \u00a0We would truly appreciate any consideration that the Congressman\/Congresswoman could make toward this very important resolution.”<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0If you happen to get a legislative assistant on the phone, you might wish to say:<\/p>\n

“Hello, my name is __________ and I have\u00a0been deeply involved with crime and crime victims, ___________. \u00a0The reason for my call today is to respectfully ask that Rep.\/Congressman\u00a0\/Congresswoman\u00a0co-sponsor the badly needed 2012 H.J. Res. 106 \u00a0U.S. Constitutional Amendment\u00a0\u00a0to protect\u00a0the rights of crime victims.<\/p>\n

[If they don’t cut you off, then say….] While any amendment to the Constitution must be considered very carefully, the accused criminal has 23 rights under the Constitution while victims have NOT A SINGLE RIGHT.<\/p>\n

**It is good to note that:\u00a0“This resolution is being sponsored by Rep. Trent\u00a0\u00a0Franks,\u00a0Republican from Arizona and Rep.
