Monday, November 14th – Day 105 of Morgan’s Stalking – He’s hiding in the tall grass – and why are the sheriff’s batteries always dead?

Morgan’s favorite lunch – peanut butter, honey and bananas

Morgan has been feeling sick, and she ignores a text from her friend in Savannah, just past midnight at ~ 12:44 am, “When is your Dad’s bday?” What a way to start November 14 – it is now Steve’s birthday!

We have a lot of activity in the morning from the stalker, and for some reason Steve is up, and ready.  Like he knew it was coming.  For the first time in a week he has the thermal imaging scope out, and is dressed all in black, when I see him go out the back door at  4:48 am, right after Morgan alerts us to rocks on her window.

I ask him if I should call the sheriffs, as he goes out he says no.  He has a black aluminum baseball bat in his free hand, and I hope he finds something worthy of a swing.  Steve was quite a home run hitter in his younger days.

I try to watch him from the back windows, and I have lost all sight of him, as I go around the house trying to pick out where he is.  Normally the outside motion detectors would be announcing his actions around the house, but this time there is nothing they are picking up on. Whatever he has decided to do this morning, he is under cover.

He calls me at 5:45 am, it is still pitch black outside, and I ask him what is up.  He has picked up two trails in the grass, and has located an area on the berm where he can clearly see the heat signature of where a body that was lying in the tall grass.  He has been watching deer as they come through, and is very familiar with how they present on the thermal imaging and he is convinced this was a person.  He is still close by so he whispers to me. Call the deputies and tell them I have heat signatures across the yard. Tell them to come in from the north side, our side of the street.

This is a different Steve, he has never had me direct the officers before.  My chest is racing I think he must see something to have said that.  One of the officers on the way calls and he has a thermal imaging scope also. Probably much better than ours and he will circle back in from the end of the street.  I tell him Steve is on the berm and has located two spots where a body was hiding.  The deputy is excited and shortly after our phone call I hear a truck race by the front of our house.

This seems too good to be true, we are working together and putting technology to work in order to catch the stalker.  Steve calls me and says he see their flashlights coming, he wonders why they always use their flashlights, you can see them so easily.  My Steve and Officer Steve P. from the sheriff’s department meet up out on the berm between our neighbor Rhonda’s house and ours.  I can see them standing there and talking, pointing at the ground.

They split up and Steve comes straight for the back door.  I unlock it and let him in, this is pathetic, were his first words.  He is very angry. Something was moving down at his end and he could not see it.  Because his batteries were dead.  Of course he can’t take batteries from us because, what, we might catch the guy?  He won’t take my thermal scope, because that is against policy.  Steve says he told him, maybe we should rent the Unicorn hot air balloon for the day, but he didn’t understand, or wanted to choose to ignore him.  He was coming right at them Steve tells me, right at them.  I thought they had night vision, could have spotted him easily.  This is a nightmare times two!

Morgan is wandering down the hall and wondering what is up.  She tells Steve, it’s just rocks against my window daddy, it’s OK I can take it.  He offers to make her French toast, and she perks up quite a bit.  “But it is your birthday.”  Morgan tells him.  “Yes, it is and I want to make you breakfast.”  Which he does, for us all.

Detective P. and Detective M. knock at the front door apologizing about the dead scope, and promising that they will have it working next time.  I was extremely disappointed, but I don’t tell him the same thing happened to the detectives last time they were here, and then I say good bye.

We have a wonderful breakfast and Morgan goes about getting ready for school.  Steve tells me this is just not fair.  Morgan is giving this all she has, more than anyone ever should, and it has just become one screw up after the next.  He tells me we have to hold them more accountable.  To actually have live batteries is not that big of a request he feels.  I know they think this stalker is harmless, but you never know Steve tells me.  First the car was keyed before the stalking started, with the word BITCH on it (down to the metal and the Carbondale police officer (not the Garfield County Sheriffs) said that it is usually a sign of someone with deep seated problems or on drugs), with lots of anger and who knows what they do next.  I don’t like this at all.

I agree with Steve, they don’t seem to be very serious at all, just going through the motions, and it is having a big affect on Morgan’s life.

Steve leaves for a project he is working on in Aspen, and Morgan comes back out at 10:27 am to announce a text she just received from her instructor, “No class today.  Had to pick up daughter from school.  Homework due Wed.  Classical vs Neoclassical.”  Then she answers her friend in Savannah who was wondering about Steve’s birthday.  At 10:48 am, she tells him, “Today. HaHa.”

Morgan is worried about her Dad, he seemed extra stressed this morning, and I tell her it is wearing on us all and he wants it over.  Morgan assures me that she is fine.  She feels safe as long as she is in the house.  That actually for her the worst part is driving up the street, once she is in the front door she feels like everything is OK.

Today is October 28, 2012 – Another weekend has been spent with lists, timelines and more evidence – more then I ever thought we would have about Morgan’s death.  The order to bring it all out, and through which communication medium, was a big decision today.  Last year after our meetings in Los Angeles we had a very ambitious plan that has now been scaled back.  Raising awareness is still our biggest goal, and our most successful to date.  Justice for Morgan is still very problematic.  We know what happened to her, that she never really stood a chance in her last 24 hrs of life, but presenting what we know and preserving the possibility of eventual prosecution is not at all so easy, as I would have thought.  I miss my little girl so much and I want to do what is right, so waiting for a few more decisions this week will be something I can do.  Steve and I have had so many offers for help that we are humbled by the love and understanding that Morgan’s story was able to spread in the world.  We pray for the strength to do justice to what she had already accomplished in her lifetime.

The chatter on our tipline about stalkers being cornered, and stopped by the lessons we learned and that are being shared with us is very satisfying.  Morgan’s stalker was a very talented individual, in a sick sort of way, and reading about what happened to Morgan has actually helped many other individuals.  It has been more than satisfying for Steve and I, that methods we employed that were useless for us, have been very successful for others.  And have so changed the perceptions of how to correctly confront your stalker for so many others.  It is not the end I had hoped for when Morgan was still alive, but now I gladly take it, in the memory of Morgan and for all of those it is helping. But this doesn’t mean we are giving up – NEVER!  And I am still very confident that a law enforcement agency will step up to the plate and take over this investigation.  Thank you all for so many signatures to our petition to the Governor of Colorado – we will continue to take signatures (only 300 left to go) and then we will be presenting it to him.

This just broke my heart, Toni. I can feel your love for her. I know it’s not as you were hoping or planned, but the outcome that I see is love being declared for your daughter and much-needed information going out to the public about stalkers and victims claiming their rights. This is no small feat, and your heart is large!

      • I’m pretty sure by the end of this trial and tribulation, you guys will have made such a huge impact that you won’t believe what you have done for others. It won’t bring Morgan back but she will be smiling down on her family with much love for all you have accomplished.

  2. The more I read of these “mishaps” by LE the more convinced I am that they were NOT going to investigate. If they were acknowledging this case seriously they would have been ready at the drop of a hat. There was activity virtually every night! How they could not have their tools ready is ridiculous! How is ANY crime being solved in the county? It just sickens me.

  3. Hello,

At what stage in all this was the car keyed?
Was it your car, one that Morgan was sharing with you?
Did it happen while the car was in your driveway?

That must have been such a horrible feeling, a total invasion feeling. So sorry all this happened to your family, I am one to carry pepper spray anyway but this blog is a great reminder to be aware of what’s out there! I signed your petition too 🙂

p.s. your recent posts do make your neighbor E seem like a likely suspect, do you feel with hindsight that he is maybe on the top of that list?

    • The car was keyed before the stalking started in August and it happened in Carbondale at night while Morgan was in taking her one night class – it was in the college parking lot and it was the car she was sharing with me and since it was in Carbondale the Carbondale Police, not the Garfield County Sheriff’s took the report. I didn’t feel like a total invasion I had a really bad intuitive feeling that someone was after Morgan, but she said to drop it that no one was after her and the Police said it was probably someone that was on drugs and angry and thought it was someone else’s car, but then later when the stalking started the Sheriff’s said they thought it might have actually been the start of the stalking and we just didn’t know for a long time. Morgan was out of state for Spring break from school and then gone for most of the beginning of summer after school was over. As far as E goes – I think he knew something but I don’t think he was involved – an investigation by the right agency would probably give us the answer to that too. Thanks for signing the petition!

      • And didn’t that happen right after Morgan had first seen K & ? at a party and left without saying anything cause he creeped her out and ? stated she was going to get that B****.

          • Can you guys ask CMC if they have any camera’s in their parking lot…see if they can go back to the night her car was keyed…there might be footage. Most school’s these day’s have camera’s everywhere.

  4. Come on, those of you who are involved, you know what is the right thing, you know what you need to do.

    • But they can’t seem to bring themselves to do the right thing – are they frightened, or just simply apathetic to helping someone that would have done anything to help them while she was alive?

  5. Could you please remind us how to sign the petition you mentioned? (Is it even possible for those outside of Colorado to sign?)

Wishing you peace and hope as you search for the truth.

  6. Toni- you are amazing for doing this. I know this must be hard for you and for all Morgan’s friends and family who read this blog but it is soooo important to get this story out on so many different levels. Wishing you much love and strength these next few months.

    • Thanks D – I think it is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life but Steve and I both know it’s important for others and I won’t stop

  7. In the last couple of days, I had a situation where I was up later than everyone else (and later than usual for the household) and heard several loud thumps on the outside wall of our house. Our neighborhood has, for some reason, been experiencing an increase in burglaries and petty thefts since summertime, so I’ve been pretty cognizant of the security of our property and cars. As soon as I heard these noises, I flipped on the outside lights and woke my dad. He grabbed his shotgun and calmly walked the perimeter of our house and property but didn’t see anything: I’m sure flipping on the outside lights made who/whatever it was hightail it out of our yard.

My point in bringing this up is, I know you have mentioned before, Toni that people have said to you things like “if it had been me, I would have barged out there with a gun, etc.” I know for certain that if my dad had encountered someone outside with no legitimate reason for being in our yard at 2:00am he would have shot them – for better or worse we live in a Stand Your Ground state. I’m not sure about Colorado’s laws, but I believe use of deadly force is allowed there… Did it ever cross your minds that you may have had to cross that line in order to end the stalking? The story of Steve being able to see a thermal signature on the berm and thinking about my dad being out in our yard with a shotgun looking for who knows what made me think of this question.

I myself am uneasy with the Stand Your Ground laws, but then again I wasn’t standing in my dad’s way when he marched out the door with his shotgun, either.

  8. It did cross our minds, and we would have, and wanted to so badly, but every time we ran outside we didn’t have a clear image of him – probably because most of the time he was on the roof, a lot of time he was just too fast for us and it was dark, he lived close by and could be sheltered before we could catch him.

You can’t just shoot into the air or your bullet could go through someone else’s house and God forbid kill a child or any innocent. When I saw him on the front porch at 4:30 am he saw me at the same time and took off like a bat out of hell- by the time I ran down the hall to the front door and out the front door Steve and I could not find him anywhere in the dark. The 2nd time I saw him, it was daylight, but I was in the house, talking to Steve, facing the front door (facing the little beveled window in the front door) when I saw a person in pants and a white shirt, dark hair sprinting fast across our driveway to the right towards Rhonda’s house. Remember now I was down the hall inside our house looking towards the front door window so I couldn’t see much detail only the person running. Then as I ran for the front door our alarm on the side of the house went off.

By the time I got out front and ran in that direction, I saw Rhonda in her garage with her back to the door unaware of the person that just ran by, but that is probably why he didn’t keep running across her driveway and lawn towards the house he was staying in – she could have turned and seen him at any moment so nstead it forced him to run down between the 2 houses where he knew there was an alarm, but to go really fast so by the time we got there he would be gone…and he was. Later that day we found out this little burst of unusual behavior was most likely prompted by Morgan driving out of the subdivision, and seeing K & ? in K’s car, and smiling at them to show them she wasn’t scared. This was Morgan’s way of fighting back. Obviously it caused some uncontrollable anger, because Rhonda later told me she couldn’t figure out why his little car drove into their driveway, then backed out, drove around the street, came back, left again and came right back again like they couldn’t figure out what they were doing…very strange, not normal behavior.

  9. And that is so true Toni about stray bullets. The thing people don’t realize is when a bullet goes up its has to come down. We were so ingrained with seeing these westerns growing up where they are all shooting guns up in the air. It just seems so dumb now thinking back. Someone had to of died or something was killed by all those stray bullets back then. If they really did go around riding and shooting like that. Who knows the way they dramatize shows. Another story in my small home town in OK, a person called the police to come get rid of a snake that had gotten in their birdhouse on their porch. The policeman not thinking, shot at the snake several times and missed a few times unaware that his bullet had hit an 8 year old several yards away fishing by a pond with his grandfather. It was a very sad time in our small town. That just happened a few years back.

  10. After reading this, it’s almost as though LE didn’t take it seriously. Either that or they were protecting someone.

      • There is just no way they could have come with equipment with dead batteries so many times unless it was just a way to get out of catching or identifying the stalker. If they were really trying, well, they are worse than Barney Fife from Mayberry! They should all be so ashamed–they are culpable for Morgan’s death. How does a man grow up wanting to be a law enforcement officer and end up letting a young woman go unprotected, left to be murdered then not investigate? They either have dead consciences, or they are sick everyday thinking about what they did to your daughter. When you said the batteries were dead on the scope, I knew then it was more than stupidity. It was planned. They are responsible. Period. And they make me sick!

        • But why would they plan something like that – it’s too weird don’t you think? Could it all be incompetence or do you think it’s something else?

  11. I just Googled that story …..the little boy was only 5 and he died after being shot in the head…..very sad……

  12. Toni, have you ever tried a medium to get answers? I know some people don’t believe in that but I was just wondering if you’ve pursued that area?

Prayers are with you and your family.

    • I have, although she is a friend, and every hunch she has given us has turned up true – amazing, but then again so is she. She is now listed as Shay Parker’s Best American Psychics Esteemed Member 2012, tested, ethical, accurate, period. She has worked with individuals, families, police departments, and has also worked with the FBI.

We are so deeply indebted to her for the kind and gentle way she has released information to us. She is deeply spiritual and we know Morgan chose her for a reason.

  13. Thanks for answering my qu about the car incident, I guess on a college campus that kind of thing does happen maybe even randomly, but if the gang bully theory is right maybe a girlfriend of K’s or some girl that liked him that was jealous of Morgan did the car keying… seems like the passive-aggressive thing a jealous young girl might do.

Also you always hear how “people will do things in a group that they would not do on their own” ie beat some one up or loot and riot = group mentality, maybe there was a group of bullies doing this and they spurned each other on. Thanks again for taking the time to answer, keep up the good work! 🙂

    • I did speak with the campus and they said they had never had that happen in the parking lot before – ever. I do believe it was the jealous girl passive-agrressive thing and I did believe anyone that was that unbalanced was a danger to my daughter.

    • I’m wondering if the writing on the car can be compared to any of the suspected’s handwriting? Just a thought.

  14. I know at my university, after several incidents, security has really ramped up and is everywhere. Did the campus ever mention if security cameras were in place in the parking lot so you could see who might be capable of doing something so horrific?

  15. I asked about cameras at the time and they didn’t have them but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had them now but I have never checked.

  16. I think this stalker has knowledge of the functioning, accuracy, quality of an image being seen on your cameras. It just seems he is not afraid to be caught on camera either walking/running or in his car. It’s almost as if he enjoys being caught on camera to traumatize your family with his haunting presence. I think he is/was a hunter and used your roof almost like a hunter would use a deer blind to stalk their prey. I agree with others that the keying of Morgan’s car is related to her stalking case. As terrifying as it is to say perhaps he/she was stalking Morgan quietly long before the stalker made his presence known on August 2, 2011. Have the police ever said what it would take to get this stalking murder case opened for investigation again?

    • You are very accurate in your thinking. The sheriffs were the ones that told us that they believed it started long before August 2nd they believed it started with the keying of her car and that was because the 2nd suspect Brooke Harris was angry with Morgan. Brooke had a violent past and she had Keenan move in with her just 3 houses down from where we lived just weeks before Morgan’s physical stalking started. This was truly a gang stalking involving more than one person…how many were involved in her actual murder I do not know at this time as most of the evidence we have seems to point to one person, but it also shows others were involved in the planning and cover up of the murder. The Garfield County sheriffs that have local jurisdiction over her case have refused from day one not to investigate, they made sure she was listed as natural causes for the first 8 months which in turn guaranteed no investigation, then after I was threatened to drop all questioning Morgan’s doctors were doing they changed her to a suicide with absolutely no evidence of suicide…since then the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has tried 3 times to ask if they can assist or take over the case and the sheriff refuses stating it is CLOSED. In Colorado at this time this is allowed. The law of Original Jurisdiction states that only the local agency can allow any other agency to investigate. This is the law that HAS TO BE CHANGED in Colorado and if Morgan’s case is the one to do it that will make me happy. Thanks for asking.

  17. The police should’ve been the ones staking out for longer than 20 minutes at a time preferably on a regular basis with decent equipment and charged batteries. Sounds like they were too busy or not taking this seriously enough. Very frustrating.
